Have you ever wondered where the term “Christian” actually comes from and what it means for us today? Let’s dig into the interesting backstory and uncover the significance of this title that shapes our faith journey. The name “Christian” isn’t just a random label slapped onto believers: it has deep roots.

Unraveling the Roots: What “Christian” Truly Means

“Christian” originates from the Greek word “Christianos,” which breaks down into “Christ” (meaning “the anointed One” or “the Messiah”) and “ian” (meaning “belonging to the party of”). So, being a Christian essentially means belonging to Christ!

How the Term “Christian” Came to be

Interestingly, Jesus Himself never referred to His followers as “Christians,” nor did the early believers adopt this label for themselves. Instead, they used various titles such as “disciples,” “believers,” “saints,” “brethren,” and “servants or slaves of Christ.” The term “Christian” was actually coined by non-believers in Antioch during the 1st Century, initially as a derogatory label.

The people of Antioch, known for inventing nicknames, bestowed the name “Christian” upon the followers of Christ in a derogatory manner, referring to them as “little Christs” “Little Messiahs” or “belonging to Christ.” This name was associated with hatred and persecution, as evidenced by the writings of Roman historian Tacitus and the accounts of early believers.

The Crucial Test: Standing Firm in the Faith

During the 1st and 2nd Centuries, being labeled a “Christian” wasn’t just about identity; it was a matter of faith. Authorities would interrogate believers, asking, “Are you a Christian?” This question became the crucial test of their faith, as true Christians refused to recant their beliefs even under direct threat of punishment. They showed unwavering allegiance to Jesus, no matter the consequences.

Turning the Tables: From Mockery to Honor

Despite its derogatory origins, the term “Christian” eventually became accepted and embraced by believers as a badge of honor. It symbolized their belonging to Christ and their identity as followers of Christ. They found pride in being called Christians, recognizing that their faith wasn’t centered on religious policies but on a Person – the Lord Jesus Christ. It was about belonging to Jesus.

As young believers in Christ navigating your faith journey, embrace what it means to be a Christian. It’s about belonging to Jesus and letting His love shine through you.

Living Out Your Faith: Embrace and Proclaim

  1. Embrace Who You Are. As Christian teens and young adults, you don’t need to be ashamed of being called a Christian. You belong to Christ! Fully embrace your identity as followers of Christ. Regardless of any challenges or persecution you may face. Remember what Romans 1:16 says: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.”
  2. Stand Firm in the Faith. Just as early Christians stood firm in their faith even under duress, remain unwavering in your commitment to Christ. Don’t let anyone shake your belief in Jesus. And don’t be ashamed of proclaiming your faith in Him, knowing that He is worthy of all honor and glory. As it says in 1 Corinthians 16:13, “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”
  3. Proclaim the Gospel. In a world where the name of Christ may be met with contempt or indifference, boldly proclaim the Gospel message anyway. Share the love and truth of Christ with those around you, knowing that salvation comes through Him alone. Be a light in your school, your workplace, your community, on social media, and beyond. Don’t hide your light. Let your light shine! (Matthew 5:15-16).
  4. Find Strength in Adversity. When faced with challenges or persecution for your faith, remember you’re not alone. God is with you, giving you strength to keep going. Stay strong, keep believing, and know that standing up for what you believe in is worth it. Take comfort in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through him who gives me strength.”
