Can I be saved if I have doubts sometimes?
Sign up to receive blog updates straight to your inboxThe question of doubt is a common struggle among young Christians. It’s easy to feel disheartened when uncertainty creeps into our faith journey. But can someone not be a true Christian if they experience spiritual doubt? Let’s explore this together.
Doubt is a natural part of the human experience, yet it can be a source of distress, especially for young Christians navigating their faith journey. Many Christian teens and young adults may wonder if they can truly be saved if they experience doubt from time to time. During times of uncertainty, it’s important to remember that doubt doesn’t disqualify you from being a believer. In fact, doubt can lead to a deeper understanding of faith and a stronger relationship with God.
Understanding DOUBT
Doubt is uncertainty of the mind. It causes a restless and unsettling feeling. The Bible describes the one who doubts “like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind” (James 1:6 NIV). Most Christians experience such times of uncertainty. The Bible acknowledges the reality of doubt and offers reassurance to those who experience it. In Jude 1:22, believers are encouraged to be merciful to those who doubt, recognizing that doubt is a common struggle.
Biblical Examples of Christ Followers who had Doubts
Now there are several examples of faithful individuals who grappled with doubt in the Bible. Let’s first consider John the Baptist. John, who boldly proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah, found himself questioning in a moment of adversity. While imprisoned, he sent messengers to Jesus, asking if He truly was the One they had been waiting for (Matthew 11:2-3). Jesus responded with compassion, affirming His identity through the fulfillment of prophecy (Matthew 11:5-6).
Moving on to Peter’s experience, we see that he, too, experienced doubt when he stepped out of the boat to walk on water with Jesus (Matthew 14:25-33). Despite witnessing miracles, Peter faltered in his faith, but Jesus reached out to him with understanding and grace. And let’s not forget Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples, who struggled to believe in the resurrection until he encountered the risen Christ himself (John 20:24-27). These examples remind us that doubt is part of the faith journey and doesn’t bar us from salvation.
I’m so thankful for these examples because they show it’s possible to be a believer in Jesus and experience doubt at the same time. But it doesn’t have to stay that way, you know. You can gain assurance from Jesus like these men did.
